Thailands’ Defence Technology Institute (DTI) has collaborated with UK’s stock market listed, Ricardo Defense, to continue the development of the Black Widow Spider 8×8 armoured vehicle programme for the Royal Thai Army. Army Technology reported; The two organisations will now work on the next phase of development of the Black Widow vehicle, which has been designed to offer protected firepower and extreme mobility in reconnaissance, command and control and fire support roles. Ricardo and DTI have already completed the initial phase of technology development (TD) for the vehicle. Ricardo defence chief engineer Andy North said the company will help DTI develop a truly world-class defence vehicle. ”This work builds upon our extremely strong reputation for the design, development and production of class-leading, agile and highly crew-protected defence vehicles, including the Foxhound, WMIK and Vixen platforms used by British forces,” North said. DTI research and development executive director, Colonel Tawiwat Veeraklaew, said: ”I am looking forward to working closely with Ricardo on this important project for Thailand’s defence industry.” “This work builds upon our extremely strong reputation for the design, development and production of class-leading, agile and highly crew-protected defence vehicles.” Capable of carrying a squad of 11 soldiers, the vehicle offers a level 4 STANAG 4569 protection against small arms, blast and anti-tank weapons. Fitted with V-shaped monocoque hull and suspended seats, Black Spider can carry a range of missions’ payloads, weapon turrets and counter measures under different operating environments. The infantry fighting version of the vehicle was displayed by DTI at 2013 Defense & Security exhibition and conference, which was held from 4th to 7th November, at the IMPACT Exhibition Center in Bangkok, Thailand. Black Widow Spider represents the first major military vehicle programme of the Thai ministry of defence’s (MoD) research and development agency, DTI, which was established to develop the country’s defence technology capability and also help build the local defence industry.
