Fighting for survival, Thailand’s SSI historic Redcar steel plant in the UK rocks with record performance. Britain’s biggest steel makers have been hit by further thumping losses as the industry struggles to cope with a slump in demand and cheap foreign competition. Accounts for Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), the Thai group that rescued the historic Redcar steel plant on Teesside in 2011, show the British arm recorded a hefty net loss of £312m last year on revenues of £768.7m. SSI UK also plunged to a £39m loss in the first three months of this year, according to figures published last week. Redcar’s steel plant today celebrated a series of production records as it continues to ramp up output. Redcar’s steel plant, owned by Thai steelmaker SSI, has set new coke, iron and steel making production records. It is the latest good news for the facility which recently launched its £37m Pulverised Coal Injection plant at the site – and restarted steel making on Teesside 16 months ago. On August 5 the site’s blast furnace achieved its best daily output since the restart of the Teesside operations, when it produced 8,866 tonnes of iron. This was bettered the next day when the plant produced 8,977 tonnes. August 6 also proved to be a landmark day for steel making at Redcar as the site’s BOS Plant achieved its best daily output since the restart of operations, when it produced 11,325 tonnes of steel. On the same day the Continuous Casting Plant achieved its best daily output since the restart of operations, when it produced 11,432 tonnes of steel slabs. This is also the best ever recorded daily tonnage on the plant for a two casting machine operation. And the Slab One Casting Machine also achieved its best daily output since the restart of operations on August 6, when it produced 6,152 tonnes. This was bettered the next day when it produced 6,398 tonnes Last month the site’s coke making plants achieved their highest monthly outputs for 2013 . The Redcar Coke Ovens produced 99,933 tonnes and South Bank Coke Ovens 31,068 tonnes. Phil Dryden, chief executive of SSI UK said: “These records are an indication of the capability and the potential of the SSI UK operation. “I am sure that further significant improvements in production levels will be achieved as the ramp up of the Pulverised Coal Injection plant process continues. “This is very much a team effort and I congratulate all of the personnel involved who can feel justly proud of their achievements.” (Source)
