Foreigners went riding motorcycles naked in Chiang Mai yesterday and were described by witnessed as male Caucasian adults. Reacting to the spectacle, residents in Chiang Mai complained to police they had spotted a number of naked foreigners riding 4 motorcycles along River Ping. In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and has been attracting over 5 million visitors each year, of which between 1.4 million and 2 million are foreign tourists, depending on the year. Chiang Mai appears to be a favourite spot for bike ride activity. In late May this year, a group of gangsters films themselves riding naked on motorcycles in Chiang Mai, which led to police crackdown on the gang. Police patrols were dispatched to investigate the scene near Nawarat Bridge, overcrossing Ping River, however, once the police arrived the group of naked foreigners had already disappeared.  Police say they are checking CCTV cameras around the District to identify the group for legal prosecution. Local residents are also asked to inform the police immediately if they spot the naked bikers anywhere else. Pol.Col. Aksorn Wongyai, said he is particularly worried that the naked foreigners might have the idea to storm into temples in the area with their naked bike rides, and police patrols had been asked to keep close look at these temples to prevent harassment from the group. The Tourism Authority of Thailand‘s (TAT) website promotes the city as “a place where both backpackers and luxury tourists can enjoy the ultimate Thailand holiday”, as the city is “one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to experience both historical and modern Thai culture coexisting side by side: the city features centuries-old chedis and temples next to modern convenience stores and boutique hotels.” (Source)
