Education Minister, Pongthep Thepkarnchana, said at the 2nd University Research Conference, that in developed countries about 30% of universities R&D is supported by the government and 70% by the private sector. He said but that in Thailand, the private sector is not greatly involved in universities R&D. Pongthep says it is the government target to increase the private sector involvement and that the government wants to help universities R&D with about 30% of their work. Some academics says, that Thailand’s universities, should go to the private sector, and jointly, explore R&D questions, instead of the universities, thinking up R&D projects to pursue on their own. Academics also says universities must diversify their R&D drive, away from just focus on what they have expertise at (Source).
